How Repair Pulled Out Stud Aluminum Cylinder Head Exhaust

  1. Yep, some other gear up dorsum  I thought it was going too well.

Bolting upwardly the second heat exchanger and one of the basics wasn't tightening. A closer wait revealed that the stud is now protruding more than the others  so I suspect it's pulling out of the head. :(

I'grand tempted to go out it and run across if it seals but it won't with my luck......

Can I repair this with the head still on? and how ?

The engine is out and then easy to become at and it is the one furthest away from the rocker box so I have the most room simply I simply can't confront stripping information technology down again to go the head off!

  2. With the heat exchanger off lock two nuts together on the stud and yous should exist able to wind it back in using a spanner on the top nut - gently and carefully,
  3. If its pulled the thread then it volition demand drilling, borer and a helicoil plumbing equipment
  4. ^this. Sounds like a helicoil job, or...i've seen step-down studs where 1 end is a larger thread. Either way, needs fixing or information technology will blow...
  5. It would be a bodge if you coated the stud in chemic metal and pushed it dorsum in
Just it simply may piece of work
  6. I recollect to be honest the rut would fissure the epoxy...
  7. I held a spark plug in a caput for two years with it:eek:
    Not aircooled though
  8. My exhaust stud went terminal year, rut overheated, no iii cylinder exhaust seat went..... bit of a domino outcome. Needed a new head after that little lot.
  9. I had 1 shear affluent a few years ago - 2 days earlier i was due to ready off on a continental jaunt .. Bugger !!

Luckily information technology was the top stud on no:-2 cylinder , not the bottom . I managed to do it in-situ by removing the tin and Simply managed to squeeze in a pocket-size battery drill betwixt the trunk and head - touch and get simply i managed to drill out the stud (eventually ) , drill oversize and fit a helicoil . slightly out equally i had to slot the frazzle flange but lasted well .
Very tight but managed to sort information technology ...

    :hattip:

    snotty and paradox like this.
  10. Helicoil information technology, I can lend you the stuff if yous're nearby.
    the2ems and paradox like this.
  11. Thanks for the advice guys, I'll go the HE off and see what's what. I'g gonna have to fix this before I fit the engine as I'll be right pixxed off if it blows. And anyway, it'll have to come up out once again to prepare it anyway.

Then, dorsum to the task tomorrow!!
    :theforce:

  12. Information technology's a pain, merely not difficult to practise.
  13. Thanks for the offer, I may have you lot up on that! I'm in Luton
  14. And so here's what I plant...............:(

Not much thread left in here o_O

Oh, hither it is !

So, is that going to Helicoil?

I thought you lot needed some threads left

  15. Helicoil - dead piece of cake !

    :hattip:

  16. Helicoil it is then

Anyone in a 20 mile radius of Luton accept a kit I could borrow? :)

Nice offering by Elevation Banana, and a good twenty-four hours to take the bike for a thrashing, but a 160 mile round trip merely doesn't toll in!

    Thanks anyway

  17. BTW; what size will I demand
  18. Thank you TBR merely you're not close. I'm going to invest in a kit - what size do i need?
  19. Personally I wouldn't helicoil it , I'd re tap it the next size M10 and stick a stepped stud in , a helicoil will work but you won't get the length of thread plus there is the chance it volition come out with the stud .... I'm not a lover of helicoils
  20. THINK - information technology`s M8 x 1.25 merely non 100% . Best to have the stud in and any quality vendor should be able to match the thread .

    :hattip:
